Tary Arterburn is one of the founding principals of Studio Outside. Tary was a founder and managing partner of MESA from 1981 to 2010 where he led the firm’s growth from its local roots in Texas to a presence in the international urban design marketplace.
Tary has worked throughout the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia on award winning projects for retail, corporate, environmental education, and residential clients. His projects infuse nature, art, and technology in a way that welcomes human interaction and comfort. Of note are Shangri La Botanical Garden and Nature Center, One and Two Arts Plaza, NorthPark Center, and FBC Plaza designed during his tenure at MESA. Tary has received many peer-reviewed design awards and honors including Consultant of the Year from the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He is a frequent lecturer and panelist at national level conferences and serves on advisory boards for Louisiana State University, Oklahoma State University, and the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture.
Tary enjoys rigorous debate and critique among design staff and consultants so that technical issues, design goals, cost, maintenance, and user expectations and outcomes are fully understood. He practices landscape architecture at a comprehensive level infusing himself into the project site, evaluating a client’s goals, and formulating numerous alternatives to best satisfy a project’s needs. He is moved by talent, newness, clear thought, and fearlessly responds to his own impressions of creativity. After the birth of his daughters, Tary became passionate about environmental education and pushes the limits of landscape architecture as a melding of fine art and science.
