National Butterfly Center
Mission, Texas
Studio Outside collaborated with the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) on the garden and campus expansion of a new headquarters facility located in Mission, Texas, near the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The contemporary building structure, designed by the Cooper/Joseph Studio (NY), offers an elegant building located within an open plain near a large population of butterflies that inhabit a nearby waterway and forested creek. The gardens are designed to attract a variety of butterfly species from the neighboring forest, and plant selections are organized in a way to support the seasonal changes throughout the year. Each garden room, established by a 22' grid originated by the architect parti, can be accessed with a variety of pathways and circulation routes throughout the site. This forward thinking public garden offers exciting opportunities for learning that will reach this south Texas community and butterfly enthusiasts nationwide.
