Shutters is a five-star resort hotel directly on the boardwalk along the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica. The character of the hotel is based on imagery of boathouses and yacht clubs typical to the turn of the century. The gardens reinforce the vernacular style of the hotel by providing intimate spaces between buildings and abstract the sense of a ship’s deck on the pool terrace. Plant material reinforce the beachfront character using the rich colors of Bougainvillea vines, Birds of Paradise and palm trees.
