Discovery Garden
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Adjacent to a small lake in northwest Tulsa, Oklahoma, sits the hillside site of the A.R. and Marylouise Tandy Floral Terraces of the Tulsa Botanic Garden. With sloping paths and art deco detailing, the garden experience leads from a lakeside perch to a dramatic hilltop view of downtown Tulsa.
Taking inspiration from Italian Renaissance hillside gardens, the Floral Terraces incorporates three linear water runnels travelling downhill through the center of the site, with water alternately pouring energetically into basins and sliding quietly across weirs and water veils. This element of play is present in every aspect of the site, from the unique planting design to the art deco flair present in many architectural elements. The wide variety of ornamental and flowering plants mimic the fountain, cascading over the terraces in a radial pattern, providing a full gallery of colors and textures to visitors walking along the path. The Floral Terraces will be a place of rest, cooling breezes, and water, and a place for plant lovers to explore to their hearts’ content.
