Baybrook Mall Lifestyle Center
Friendswood, Texas
General Growth Properties engaged the design team to take on the expansion of an already successful, but outdated, interior shopping mall just south of Houston. A collaboration between Omniplan and Studio Outside envisioned a fresh take on the traditional shopping center. The team created dynamic and flexible outdoor spaces shaped by the architectural backdrop to provide a unique shopping and entertainment experience. A unified design language strengthens the corridor experience by strategically organizing gathering spaces at regular intervals. The main promenade features a momentous fountain and towering sculpture that mimics the native wetland grasses of the surrounding coastal environment. The fountain commands the visitor’s attention at night with lights shimmering through the water. At the heart of the Lifestyle Center is a community-engaging “Great Lawn” surrounded by retailers and shaded restaurant patios – creating a lively diversity of social experiences. The combination of date palms and reflective water features create a harmonious rhythm that invites the visitor down the length of the lawn. The variety of spaces accommodates both large crowds for movies on the lawn, as well as smaller more intimate gatherings.
