Situated 10 miles southwest of historic downtown Savannah, the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens is an extension of the University of Georgia system supported by the 'Friends of the Coastal Gardens.' Previously a USDA plant introduction station and a research center for the University of Georgia, the site became the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in 2012.

Adding to the ever-growing collection of gardens, The Children's Garden aims to blend play, learning, and exploration within a botanical context, encompassing approximately 1.5 acres of the 51-acre campus. Located on a central axis between an expansive Bamboo Maze and the future Trustee's Garden, the Children's Garden will draw families from all over the region to experience the unique flora of the exhibit. 

The main features of the garden include a toad and dragonfly splash-pad, a lawn 'maze' modeled after the estuaries of nearby Savannah, a grass amphitheater for learning, a tadpole pond for exploration, and a tree adventure for active play in an existing grove of large pines and canopy trees. These elements are organized on a central axis along with sensory and thematic exhibits including a butterfly garden, a fruit tree arbor tunnel, and a slithering snake-shaped berm. Parents can sit in the shade of native canopy and pine trees as their children play and explore the garden's many play features and educational programs.
