Sally Cheever Girl scout leadership center
Backyard master plan
san antonio, Texas

The Sally Cheever Leadership Center, situated near the Salado Creek Greenway, presents an opportunity to establish a node in San Antonio’s Natural Areas with a small Urban Nature Center. The envisioned Backyard would serve as a safe, accessible space for girls to delve into local ecology, nature skills, and history, acting as a gateway for exploration of the Salado Creek Greenway and connected parks. The center can foster links with nearby landmarks such as Walker Ranch Historic Landmark Park and Phil Hardeberger Park through various transportation modes, enabling seamless programmatic integration. This connectivity mirrors the relationship between in-town Girl Scout facilities and Camp La Jita, allowing for a progression of experiences for girls.

Wurzbach Parkway facilitates a convenient 5.6-mile vehicular connection between Sally Cheever and Phil Hardberger Park, with Walker Ranch conveniently situated between the two. Hike and bike connections from Sally Cheevers to the Salado Creek Greenway are readily accessible, offering approximately a 3.7-mile one-way trip to Hardberger Park, with Walker Ranch at the halfway point. The trail entrance is approximately 0.6 miles from Sally Cheever, accessible via city sidewalks before linking to dedicated hike and bike trails.
